The Martin Luther King Coalition is made up of 19 NH community organizations having missions that reflect the principles of the late Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In addition to those listed above, the following organizations are members of the Coalition: the American Friends Service Committee-NH, represented by Arnie Alpert; the Arab- American Forum, represented buy Nabil Migalli; the Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains, represented by Jess Riendeau; Global Citizens Circle, represented by Eleanor Dunfey-Freiburger; Granite State Organizing Project, represented by Erica MacKillop; the National Education Association-NH, represented by Rhonda Weslowski, the New Hampshire Civil Liberties Union, represented by Claire Ebel; the New Hampshire Council of Churches, represented by David Lamarre-Vincent; the New Hampshire Minority Health Coalition, represented by Glinda Allen; the New Hampshire State Employees Association, SEIU Local 1984, represented by Gary Smith; New Hampshire Veterans for Peace, represented by Will Thomas; Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, represented by Joyce Bourque, Temple Adath Yeshurun, represented by Linda Rockenmacher, and the Unitarian Universalist Social Church of Manchester, represented by Ellen Belanger.
The Martin Luther King Coalition Steering Committee elected Officers for the 2009-2010 Planning Year: Chair: Traci Belanger, representing the Cultural Diversity Task Force of Greater Manchester; Vice-Chair & Secretary: DG Krasner, representing the Greater Manchester Black Scholarship Foundation; Treasurer: Sally Crateau, representing the New Hampshire Citizens Alliance; Arts & Writing Contest Coordinator: Scott McGilvray, representing the Manchester Education Association; Arts & Writing Contest Co-Coordinator: Eva Castillo, representing the New Hampshire Alliance of Immigrants & Refugees.
The Martin Luther King Coalition Steering Committee has planned & presented the Annual Martin Luther King Day Community Celebration for almost three decades: the 2010 celebration will be the 28th. The celebration includes the presentation of the annual Martin Luther King Award to a member of the NH community whose work & contributions to society reflect the principles of the late Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; the 2009 award recipient was Regis Lemaire, former Director of the Office of Youth Services, & Co-Founder of the Cultural Diversity Task Force Society of Greater Manchester. The celebration also includes the presentation of the Lionel Washington Johnson Youth Awards to the winners of the annual Martin Luther King Arts & Writing Contest. The 2009 award recipients, although they were not the only entrants, were all Oyster River Middle School students from Nate Grove’s 8th grade class: Pranav Nanda & Jialin Shi won 1st & 2nd place, respectively, in the Arts category; Connor Grove & Lydia Watt, won 1st & 2nd place, respectively,
in the Writing category.
